There are several managed machines running Windows. Many are in the various student labs, and several more are in offices around the buildings.
The Enet Managed Windows machines:
-
All allow any user with a valid UofM AD account to log in:
-
User accounts on AD use the same password as your University Internet Login (and are changed with it).
-
Unix Home directories are directly available as H:\ on Windows.
-
Users are not permitted to create files on the local hard drives (C: and D:) except into C:\temp (or D:\temp) and %TMP%,
BOTH will be cleared the next time anyone logs on to the machine. Save your files to H:, G:, R: or U:.
-
Also - all user RUN REGISTRY KEYS will be cleared during login (before they are used).
This means that selecting a preference to run a program on login WILL NOT WORK. (you must manually put a link to the program in your personal startup folder)
Note - system RUN REGISTRY KEYS are cleared on every reboot.
-
Users are prevented from installing any software which requires System Registry modification or files added to C: or D:
(this is both a security and virus prevention feature). This also may prevent the installation of some screen savers.
-
All use the following directory structure on H: for Start Menu and Desktop files
(if you are looking for files from a Windows application, check under H:\wnt\):
-
Personal Start Menu -- H:\wnt\start_menu\
-
Personal Desktop -- H:\wnt\desktop\
-
Personal Documents -- H:\wnt\documents\ (Most applications look here first).
-
Personal Startup -- H:\wnt\start_menu\programs\startup\ (any files here will be auto opened AFTER the Start Menu appears).
-
Personal Application Data -- H:\wnt\appdata\ (Misc settings - note: IF NOT THERE, it may be in "H:\wnt\bin\user\application data").
-
Personal .bat (and other executable) files -- H:\wnt\bin\ (added to %PATH% when you log in).
-
Personal Initialization Script -- H:\wnt\bin\init\shell.bat (Run if found INSTEAD of the explorer [the start menu]). Contact Enet if you wish to use this.
-
Have the following software and more available (Most applications save files and configuration information on the users home directory or in a personal registry file kept on the machine.
This allows you to set personal preferences of color, background, mouse-handedness,
language, default printer, etc. -- without affecting other users' preferences).
